Part man, part mystery, ALL pop cultural encyclopedia: Jaguar Skills is the type of DJ who won’t just identify a sample, he’ll source the recording date, studio, musicians and engineers. Give time, he’ll find out what they had for breakfast that day, too.
This hunger for the most miniscule musical details has characterised, influenced and inspired every single life event since his first role as the maverick teenager publisher and music journalist behind Downlow, one of the UK’s earliest hip-hop magazines. A life of sonic activism and musical story telling continues to this very day… As an artist, DJ, producer, curator, archivist and so many other roles in between.
You’re just as likely to see him tour with The Prodigy as you are see him making Netflix theme tunes for comedian Romesh Ranganathan. On other days he could be writing entire scores to movies that only exist in his mind, such as his debut album ‘The Man In The Jaguar Mask’, or creating complex trips for his Hip-Hop Timebomb project; epic mixes that take his encyclopedic skills and dexterous chops to such levels of delicious detail you’ll be scratching your head more than he scratches the 12”s.
Joining so many musical dots you’d swear his life was a magic eye picture, the list of credits, collaborations and creative accomplishment since his first DJ set in 2002 is as endless as it is eclectic. From producing Lupe Fiasco’s breakthrough hit ‘We Love You’ (2006) to creating a brand new KRS-One banger from an old forgotten acapella in Nervous Records basement (‘Big Up New York’, 2014) via his consistent and highly respected presence in the drum & bass scene via releases on the respected likes of RAM Records and Viper Recordings, Jaguar Skills continues to weave and bob with nothing but passion for the craft, nerdy obsession and a devout celebration of the culture.
The man, the mystery, the encyclopedic knowledge continues…
