Throughout September, local promoters brought their own sounds, ideas and audiences to The Smokehouse as part of our 10th birthday celebrations. We caught up with three of them to look back on their nights and hear what keeps them coming back to the music scene here in Ipswich.
Jonathan, producer and presenter at Ipswich Community Radio
After hosting Baker's Dozen Radio Show live gigs over the last few years, it felt pretty special to be part of the Smokehouse 10 birthday celebrations. We had an amazing turnout to watch Loome, I.am.afiya and Oscar November perform on the night, and it was a great opportunity to showcase some of the many talented local artists I play on my radio show every week.

I also invited Caitlin from Brighten The Corners on to Ipswich Community Radio in the lead-up to the gig to talk about the other birthday events and the positive impact the venue has had on the local community in Ipswich. I love being part of the wider music network, and my show’s a great way to shout about what’s going on around town.

I first started coming to The Smokehouse in 2018 to see a friend's band perform, and I've seen countless brilliant local artists and national bands since then. The venue provides more established acts with a unique space to play intimate gigs, and most importantly gives up-and-coming artists the chance to hone their skills and practise in front of genuinely supportive crowds.
Dylan, independent music promoter and DJ
I loved being part of the Smokehouse 10 celebrations this year. It was the second time I've taken over the venue, this time with Return of the Boom Bap, a flashback to the golden era of hip-hop and the soulful sounds that shaped it. My night featured vinyl sets from DJs JAL and Jimmy Green, and ended with me on the decks.

I can honestly say I’ve enjoyed every moment I've spent in that rectangular room, but my favourite has to be my first event there. It was unforgettable and a real stepping stone in my musical aspirations. For me, the whole birthday month summed up what makes the venue so important to our town. There’s a real sense of community, the freedom to be yourself and great music right on your doorstep.

The Smokehouse gives people the space to put on their own events, express themselves and share the things they care about. Doing that in a safe environment with a strong sense of community is something I really value. There are so many different music scenes in Ipswich and there really is something for everyone, it’s just a matter of finding it. And if there isn’t a scene for whatever it is that you’re into, you can bring it to the town yourself thanks to Brighten The Corners.
Kieran, founder of Offbeat Promotions and local musician
After putting on a successful run of Offbeat gigs at The Smokehouse, it was great to help celebrate the huge variety of music and people that make the venue what it is. My night featured local bands Mountain Peaks, Midweek and Buggery Act, with all ticket sales from the event going to Suffolk Refugee Support.

As a local artist myself, some of my favourite moments at The Smokehouse have been playing to a sold-out room. There's nothing better than seeing the crowd go wild and feeling that energy from the stage. I also love selling tickets to my own gigs - it gives me a real sense of achievement, knowing I've brought people together for a night of shared music. When the room is full and everyone's there for the same reason, it's hard to beat.
What I love about the Ipswich music scene is that there's something for everyone. I've met some true friends through music and played live to people I might never otherwise have met. Music brings people together, and that emotional connection is the best part of it all.

Smokehouse 10 was all about the people who make the venue what it is, from the promoters and artists to our amazing volunteers and everyone who comes through the doors. A huge thank you to everyone who made our birthday month so special.
