Digitonal
Ipswich based clarinettist and producer Andrew Dobson has been producing his unique brand of classical-inflected electronica as Digitonal since 1997. Originally part of the second wave of UK ambient IDM, the project has navigated a multi-influence groove over the years, with a glitchy machine heartbeat juxtaposed against human musicianship and melodic expression.
Landing somewhere between the playful downbeat electronica of Plaid and the minimalist beauty of Nils Frahm, he's released five studio albums and a series of EPs and compilation appearances across a range of indie labels, including Toytronic, Castles in Space and long-time home Just Music (Jon Hopkins, Marconi Union), with a new long player "The Night Album" set for release this summer.
Digitonal have also been on remix and production duties for a diverse range of artists including Sophie Hutchings, Max Richter, Marconi Union, B12, Kirsty Hawkshaw, Kelli Ali and Alice Russell.
A former chillout festival stalwart, Digitonal have toured globally, from a Californian NASA base to the Kiev Opera House, receiving acclaim for their improvised sets of great range and beauty.
